28/09: Sri Lankan spikers offered with contracts to play professional Volleyball in Iran and Indonesia
Sri lanka men’s volleyball team gave a terrific fight to the table leaders and the hosts Iran in the quarter final match of the 16th Asian Senior men’s Volleyball Championship here in Teheran on 27 Sep 11.
Although the Iranian got the better of Sri Lanka 25-16, 25-18 and 25-15, Lankan spikers came out with flying colours thus played an excellent volleyball against the world no 19 team. Now, Sri Lanka will play Japan today (28). According to the performance shown by the teams so far, Iran and Australia have a slight advantage over other teams to qualify for the finals.
The good news reaching Sri Lanka is that, Sri Lankas most successful player Janitha Surath has been offered a contract to play professional volleyball in Iran and this is considered as a great victory for the national game of the country. Iran being a world class team at the elite league, this offer is considered as an honour to both Janith and Sri Lanka. Besides, Sameera Dissanayake, Shamil Malinda and Gayan Madushanka had been offered contracts by Indonesia.
Earlier Sri Lanka beat Indonesia and Uzbekistan and reached the super eight round of the Asian championship for the first time in the history.

The Sri Lanka men’s Volleyball team which is attending the 16th Asian Volleyball Championship in Teheran, Iran were beaten by the strong Australian team at the super eight round match conclude yesterday ( 25 ) . The score was 25-16, 25-19 and 25-13 in favour of Australia. They will play Korea today evening in their next match.
Earlier, Sri Lankan team creates history by qualifying for the super eight rounds for the first time. At the preliminary round matches, Sri Lanka lost to China, yet came back strongly to beat much fancied Uzbekistan and Indonesia.
Now, China, Japan, Korea, Iran , Australia, India Pakistan and Sri Lanka are competing at the super eight level with total of 16 teams have attended the competition.
For the Lankan lads, their skipper Sameera Dissanayake and Janitha Surath had performed admirably bringing great honour to motherland in the process.

22/09: Dilan Perera elected to the Board of Administration of the Asian Volleyball Confederation ( AVC )
The President of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare, Hon Dilan Perera was unanimously elected to the Board of Administration of the AVC today, (22) at the 19th AVC General Assembly held at Chinese Taipei.
This is considered as a great personal achievement as well as a victory for the national game of the country. Earlier in July this year, Minister Perera was elected as the President of the Asian Central Zone Volleyball Association bringing great credit to island.
Besides, Perera is the first Sri Lankan to elected to a high office at the Asian Volleyball Confederation. According to Minister Perera, this appointment is a result of the development activities under taken by the Sri Lankan Volleyball Federation to uplift and popularize the game in the country as well as the region.

19/09: National Men’s Volleyball team to participate at the 16th Asian Volleyball Championship in Iran
The national men’s volleyball team will leave for Iran on 19 September 2011 to participate at the 16th Asian men’s volleyball championship to be held from 21 to 29 September 2011 in Teheran, Iran.

Sri Lanka will play their first match on 21 Sep 11 with China and the next match will against Uzbekistan on 22 Sep 11. They will meet Indonesia in the last preliminary level match on 23 Sep 11. In the previous Asian championship held in Philippines in 2009, Japan won the event, while Iran and Korea secured second and third places.
