Author Susil Ranasinge was recognised by his peers for his efforts in developing volleyball in the country

Colombo, Sri Lanka, February 18, 2013 – The Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation recently launched a book entitled “Volleyball Then and Now”, authored by Susil Ranasinghe, General Secretary of the federation. The launch took place at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo with many distinguished guests and past national players in attendance.

Though the book is written primarily for a Sinhalese speaking audience, the chapter discussing international volleyball is in English. The picture captions in the book have also been translated into English where possible. The book will be distributed to schools and libraries free of charge.

Speaking at the ceremony, Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister, Mr Mahidananda Aluthgamage said that volleyball was a good example of a sport that has taken hold at the grass roots level and in the villages. Noting the responsibility of the federation to popularise the game and bring it up to international standards, Mr Alithgamage said, “We must try hard to create a generation of sport loving people in Sri Lanka in the future.”

Dilan Perera, President of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, praised the author saying, “Volleyball has progressed so much through the dedicated work done by Susil Ranasinghe.”

Sri Lanka has experienced an expansion in the popularity of the game over the past years, with the number of participating teams in the tournaments having increased to over 5,000.

Following the book launch there was also a ceremony where the national veteran volleyball players who took part in the South Asian Games from 1950 to 1991 were presented with trophies to commemorate their service to the country.

Colombo, Sri Lanka, February 27, 2013 – The Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation launched its 2013 development season with a Cool Volley Programme in Kurunegala, situated in the north western province of Sri Lanka.

This event attracted a good turnout of girls and boys between the ages of 12 and 14 who were coached by 8 professionals including the national coach. Participants were taught volleyball basics and every effort was made to develop their interest in the sport. Volleyballs, nets and mini score boards were distributed to the schools of the participating children.

“It is a reasonable achievement as the opening and closing ceremonies were as colourful as the previous Cool Volley Programme, which was held at the Badulla Indoor Volleyball Training Courts,” said Susil Ranasinghe, General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation

A referees seminar was also organised to coincide with the opening of a new volleyball court.
